The mood at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had conceded ten goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Coming Unstitched?
Had their campaign unraveling, or did there exist a thread keeping it intact from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for accounting issues. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it has been hard to ascertain if they are improving or imploding.
The Youngster's Unforeseen Return
One individual continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, Lazio were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad without replacements.
Cancellieri arrived originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in 2022-23, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."
Discovering His Best Role
Perhaps the manager was still trying to identify the nature of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
